Ajax Amsterdam manager Frank de Boer said that there was nothing unexpected in his side's 2-0 win over PSV Eindhoven at Philips Stadion on Sunday.
Arkadiusz Milik opened the scoring in just the second minute before Anwar El Ghazi's 76th-minute effort saw Ajax leapfrog PSV to go top of the Eredivisie standings.
"I said before the game that it was important not to lose today and to win is absolutely fantastic," de Boer told NOS. "I am very proud of our players. They fought really hard for this victory and they deserved to win this game.
"We started well with a great goal from Milik and a fantastic assisted pass from Joel Veltman, but after the first goal I thought that we fell away a bit during the first half.
"We had full confidence in getting a good result today and we knew we could win if we could take it to PSV as a team, work together and be compact, and to dare to take our chances when they arrive, and we did that."
Ajax are now two points ahead of their opponents in the Eredivisie standings, which is effectively a two-horse race between them and PSV, as third-placed Feyenoord are 19 points adrift.
"I have always said that I prefer to be the league leaders rather than the chasers but we must play this way every week until the end of the season and then we have a great chance to be champions," de Boer concluded.
