Juventus were crowned Serie A champions following Roma’s victory over Napoli, while AC Milan’s Europa League aspirations were dealt a damaging blow following a shock defeat to bottom-of-the-table Hellas Verona.
Radja Nainggolan’s 89th-minute strike proved the difference on the day as Roma ended Napoli‘s hopes of snatching the league crown from the grasp of the Old Lady, who recorded a 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Sunday.
Cristian Brocchi’s Milan, meanwhile, went into the Monday’s contest at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi aiming to extend their unbeaten run to three matches, following an encouraging 1-0 victory over Fiorentina and a goalless draw with Carpi.
However, they were unable to maintain their good run as Hellas Verona reignited their slim hopes of beating the drop with a memorable come-from-behind victory at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
The Rossoneri appeared be perfectly poised to claim all three points after claiming the lead in the 21st minute through Jeremy Menez, however the hosts rallied magnificently after the break to claim what at one stage appeared to be an unlikely victory.
Giampaolo Pazzini levelled matters from the penalty spot following Jose Mauri’s foul in the danger area, and the comeback was completed in the fifth minute of injury time when Luca Siligardi fired a free-kick into the top-left corner to silence the travelling support.
Monday’s action concluded with relegation-threatened Carpi clinching a 1-0 win against Empoli at Stadio Alberto Braglia, with both sides finishing with ten men in an ill-tempered contest.
Carpi’s task was made easier by the fact the visitors lost their man, Levan Mchedlidze, after just 25 minutes of play for a foul on Marco Crimi.
They still had to wait until the 84th minute for the winner, however, with Kevin Lasagna converting from close range following Lorenzo Pasciuti’s cross into the danger area.
The hosts were also reduced to ten men, Lorenzo Lollo picking up his second yellow card in the 90th minute, but it didn’t affect the final result as Carpi held on to claim a vital three points.
Monday’s Serie A results:
Roma 1-0 Napoli
Hellas Verona 2-1 Milan
Carpi 1-0 Empoli
