Shaw breaks his leg

Benfica beat Chivas de Guadalajara in ICC friendly in California

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has "suffered a double fracture of the leg" following a challenge in the first half of their Champions League clash away to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The unfortunate incident happened in the 15th minute of the match at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven when the left back went on a forceful run into the home side's penalty area and was brought down by a strong Hector Moreno challenge .

The PSV defender ensured the ball went out for a corner but the England defender stayed down and screamed in anguish.

Subsequent replays showed that the 20 year-old's leg snapped as he went to ground. After receiving treatment on the pitch for almost 10 minutes, Shaw was stretchered off to a standing ovation.

"He won't play in the group stage, I don't think," said manager Louis van Gaal. "I hope he will play again this season."

Midfielder Ander Herrera added: "Sad about the defeat but much sadder about Luke's injury. Come back soon my friend."

The injury is really bad luck for the former Southampton player as he now faces a long spell on the sidelines just when he seemed to have cemented a regular place in United's starting line up.

Shaw has been hampered by a number of injuries and fitness issues in his young career as he endured a stop-start first season at the English giants last term.
