Van Dijk to keep improving

Favre expects ‘special test’ for Dortmund when they face Liverpool in pre-season

New Southampton signing Virgil van Dijk says he still has a long way to go if he wants to be a top defender in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old centre-back made an encouraging debut for the Saints on Saturday, helping them keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw at West Brom.

Van Dijk, who was signed from Scottish champions Celtic on transfer deadline day, admits he will need time to adapt to playing football in another country.

He said: "I just need to keep improving and working and enjoy these moments as well. The most important thing is just to be confident.

"I'm not here for any reason, I'm here because I deserve to be here. I need to be confident and the team we have, has a lot of quality, you can see that last year, and we want to improve on that.

"The tempo here is higher of course but I like to play football, so I'm not like your typical Scottish player who likes to play long balls."
