Marquez: Tyre change was crucial

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has admitted that his second tyre change played an instrumental role in his victory at the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday.

Marquez changed from wet tyres back to slicks on lap 18 as the circuit was starting to dry up after rain earlier in the race.

The Repsol Honda rider's decision to do so proved to be the key to his victory as he took the lead when Valentino Rossi changed his tyres on lap 21 and didn't look back from that point on.

"It was a very strange race but I’m happy with the end result," Marquez told reporters. "It is difficult to explain everything that happened during the race but I think the key was the second tyre change – from wets to slicks.

"That was where we made a difference and – believe it or not – it was not me who decided everything! The team informed me of the situation with the pit board and helped me decide when to come in to change bikes, and I have to thank them!"

Marquez, who recently admitted that he has virtually no chance of retaining his MotoGP title, now trails Rossi by 63 points in the race for the 2015 World Championship title.
