The Magpies' miserable start ot the season continued as Dimitri Payet put the finishing touches on a flowing move down the left hand side to put West Ham 1-0 up after just nine minutes of play.

Mark Noble did brilliantly to tee up the France international, who produced a quality finish from 20 yards out.

The Hammers had another good chance 10 minutes later, as some neat interplay between Victor Moses and Diafra Sakho nearly resulted in a second for Payet, but his shot on this occasion was a weak one.

Within minutes, Newcastle had a chance to level at the other end. Georginio Wijnaldum beat two defenders and set up Daryl Janmaat, who only had the goalkeeper to beat, but unfortunately for the Dutchman, his shot barreled into the keeper's legs.

Newcastle were enjoying their fair share of possession, but were doing very little with it, while West Ham were also failing to convince.

There was an injury blow for the Hammers late in the first half on as Angelo Ogbonna was replaced by Carl Jenkinson.

West Ham did have a decent chance two minutes from the break, however, as Moses backheeled a pass to Payet on the edge of his own area and then regathered the ball on the other side of the pitch, but his shot from a tight angle was just wide.

Three minutes into the second half, the home side did double their advantage.

Moses weaved his way through the defence and though his shot hit the bar, the rebound found Payet, who fired home from close range.

Newcastle tried their level best to get back in the game, but they were lacking quality up front and it was West Ham who nearly went three up in the 69th minute when Aaron Crosswell unleashed a shot from a direct free kick on the edge of his box that went just wide.

On 81 minutes, Siem De Jong very nearly got one back for the visitors, but Darren Randolph was on hand to tip it away for a corner.

Andy Carroll came on late in the game for the first time since February to a huge cheer, replacing impressive debutant Moses, and despite some late pressure from Newcastle, the home side held on to complete a comfortable 2-0 victory, moving up to an impressive fifth in the Premier League table.
