Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has backed Anthony Martial to exceed expectations after his goal in the 3-1 win over Liverpool.
Martial, 18, came off the bench to score the third goal against the Reds at Old Trafford, getting the better of both Nathaniel Clyne and Martin Skrtel before firing an excellent finish past a helpless Simon Mignolet to pen his account on debut.
Carrick admits to not having known much about Martial before his £36 million switch from Monaco to Old Trafford, but fully expects the youngster to make his mark in the Premier League after his impressive debut.
"I have to be totally honest, I didn't know an awful lot, no, like many, but I do now," Carrick told ESPN FC. "We haven't seen an awful lot of him.
"It doesn't get any better than that, does it? Coming in and coming on and scoring against Liverpool like that. He has done well to get in that position and I thought the finish was terrific, how he just slotted it home. He was so calm and composed and you can't ask for a better start.
"It's a good start for him. I am sure his confidence will be sky high after that. It's a good way to settle him and if that has raised expectation then so be it, but that is part of the game."
