Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is rated as doubtful for his side's midweek Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven.
Rooney missed Saturday's 3-1 victory over Liverpool due to a hamstring injury suffered in training, and is not expected to recover in time for the Red Devils' Champions League opener, according to manager Louis van Gaal.
"I don't think he will play," said the Dutchman. "He is injured so we have to take care of him. I think he is very important for us and I don't want to take any risks, so that's why he didn't play against Liverpool.
"We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have days to go. I don't think he will but maybe he shall play at Southampton."
New signing Anthony Martial could make his full debut for the club in Rooney's absence, with the teenager coming off the bench to score against the Reds on his United debut.
