Marin Cilic's coach Goran Ivanisevic believes the upcoming US Open semi-final in New York is the perfect stage for the Croatian to finally beat Novak Djokovic.
After failing to defeat the Serb in 13 attempts, Cilic will be hoping he can end that losing streak on his 14th attempt as he aims to reach his second successive final of the US Open.
On the prospect of beating Djokovic, one-time slam winner Ivanisevic used Cilic’s amazing semi-final performance against Roger Federer at 2014 US Open, where he beat the Swiss 6-3 6-4 6-4, as an example of just how good Cilic is on hard-courts.
"If Marin has a chance to beat Novak somewhere, this is the court, this is the place." Ivanisevic told telegraph.co.uk. "He has to go for his shots, and they have to go in."
However, Ivanisevic is not underestimating the eight-time grand slam winner as he knows how dangerous Djokovic can be once he figures out his opponent’s rhythm.
"Djokovic is like a shark," he said. "When he smells blood, it’s over. He eats you. But Marin will beat him one day, and hopefully this is the day."
This will be Cilic and Djokovic's fifth meeting at a grand slam as they both aim to win the US Open title.
The other semi-final will be contested between Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer, who competed against each other earlier this year at the Roland Garros.
