Lin Dan advanced to the semi-finals of the Japan Open following his win on Friday.
The former world number one survived a scare in the second game on his way to defeating Tian Houwei 21-14, 21-18 on the courts of Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Dan was in control for the entirety of the opening game, but the match looked as though it would go into a third game after Houwei built a 18-14 lead in rthe second salvo.
However, the five-time world champion scored seven points in row to secure a place in the final four in Tokyo.
The Chinese sensation now faces Tommy Sugiarto in the first semi-final, who defeated fellow Indonesian Ihsan Maulana Mustofa earlier in the day.
In other results, sixth seed Chou Tien Chen defeated India's Parupalli Kasyap 21-14, 21-18 and seventh seed Viktor Axelsen battled through a tough encounter against Lee Dong Keun, winning 23-21, 21-17.
Chen and Axelsen face each other in the other semi-final, which will be played on Saturday.
