Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in training.
The 23-year-old became the Blues' undisputed number one in the off-season, following Petr Cech's move to London rivals Arsenal.
The Belgium international has started three matches for the defending Premier League champions, although he was red-carded in the 2-2 draw with Swansea on the opening day of the campaign.
Courtois' involvement has been brought to an abrupt halt, however, after Mourinho confirmed the news of the keeper's injury.
Chelsea, though, will be hoping he makes a quicker than expected recovery over the next few months.
"Courtois was injured in a training session with the goalkeepers," Mourinho told the club's official website.
"I cannot tell you much, but he needs surgery in his right knee, he will be out for quite a long time, but I cannot be specific as to how long he will be out."
