Okoye lands with Cardinals

Former British Olympian Lawrence Okoye has signed for the Arizona Cardinals after being waived by NFC West rivals the San Francisco 49ers.

Okoye, who holds the British record for the discus, was let go by San Francisco last week after two seasons trying to establish himself in the NFL, having swapped the track for the gridiron following the 2012 Olympics.

Franchises finalised their 53-man rosters over the weekend but Okoye revealed he has been given a shot by the Cardinals and will wind up on their practice squad where he can continue his NFL education.

Writing on Twitter, Londoner Okoye said: "Really excited to join the @AZCardinals!! Big thank you to everyone that has supported and motivated throughout this journey!

"9ers fans have been awesome with me throughout my time there – will always appreciate you no matter where I'm at!"

The weekend's roster moves did not deliver good news for other Britons, though.

Rookie running back Jay Ajayi has been moved to the Miami Dolphins' injured reserve/designated to return list due to a chest injury.

That means the Londoner will miss at least half of the 2015 season and will therefore be absent when the Dolphins face the New York Jets at Wembley at the start of next month.

"Still trusting His plan. Minor setback for a MAJOR comeback. #POME #ShineTime," Ajayi wrote on Twitter.

"To my Londoners, I'll be back!! @MiamiDolphinsUK"

Manchester-born offensive tackle Menelik Watson ruptured his Achilles tendon late last month and has been placed on the Oakland Raiders' injured/reserve list, likely keeping him out of the entire campaign.

Jack Crawford made the Dallas Cowboys' 53, but former London Warriors defensive end Efe Obada was released.
