Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor may have played up the prospect of a boxer doing battle with an MMA star, but the American has poured cold water on talk that a potential MMA bout, with ‘Money’ only interested in meeting McGregor in the ring.
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Mayweather will only fight on his terms; while McGregor has great pulling power in the UFC, Mayweather is a fighting legend.
However, should a match-up with McGregor not come to fruition, Mayweather has no plans to get back in the ring.
“If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor … not against nobody else,” he recently told ESNews. “Because this matchup is so intriguing.
“You have (a boxer) against an MMA fighter — one of the best MMA fighters to ever … stand up and do it. To do combat and to stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter, and when I look at his fights, he’s a little faster than I thought he was.”
The undefeated American gave off the impression that negotiations between the two parties were in full swing, fuelling speculation that the fight, which initially seemed like nothing more than a PR exercise, may actually happen.
“I’m pretty sure we’re going to have a master plan to make that fight happen,” he claimed. “It hasn’t happened, yet, but we locked down some dates, me and my team, me and Al Haymon, me and Leonard Ellerbe. We locked down some dates, in different countries, in different cities in the United States.”
