Super kind Federer signs tennis balls for adoring young French Open fans

Fifth seed Petra Kvitova cruised past Nicole Gibbs 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to book her spot in the third round of the US Open.

Kvitova has never previously made it past the fourth round of the US Open, but another strong performance early on suggests she has the potential to go further this year.

The Czech was not at her best in the first set and committed 14 unforced errors in the first set, but she only needed to break Gibbs once before converting her third set point to take the opener 6-3.

As was the case in the first set, a single break was all the was required for Kvitova who broke Gibbs once before finishing off the 22-year-old American in an hour and 10 minutes.

After a mediocre start, Kvitova improved as the match went on, with the fifth seed winning 86 percent of points on her first serve, while hitting 20 winners.

Kvitova will face Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the third round after the 32nd seed beat Danka Kovinic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Earlier in the day, second seed Simona Halep defeated Kateryna Bondarenko 6-3, 6-4, while 11th seed Angelique Keber triumphed over Karin Knapp 7-5, 6-2.

The major upset of the day was provided by Johanna Konta, who recorded a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 6-2 win over ninth seed Garbine Muguruza.
