Lee ends Verma’s run at Vietnam Open

Momota & Chen close badminton season with World Tour Finals victories

South Korea's Lee Hyun Il defeated Indian challenger Sameer Verma in the quarter-finals of the Vietnam Open Grand Prix at the Nguyen Du Stadium on Friday.

Lee was in no mood to hang around, and needed just 42 minutes to complete a 21-15, 24-22 victory.

The South Korean shuttler goes on to face 10th seed Wei Feng Chong in the semi-finals, after the Malaysian beat Japan's Kenta Nishimoto 21-13, 21-16.

The other semi-final is an all-Indonesian affair between the tournament's top seed, Tommy Sugiarto, and Anthony Ginting.

Sugiarto defeated countryman Alamsyah Yunus 21-19, 21-15, while Ginting eliminated Jeon Hyeok Jin of South Korea 21-19, 21-11.

In the women's draw, Japanese qualifier Saena Kawakami upset third seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 16-21, 21-16, 23-21.

She goes on to face another Thai in Supanida Katethong, who beat Hana Ramadhini 22-20, 18-21, 21-16.

Cheng Chi-Ya of Taiwan advanced with a 19-21, 21-13, 21-10 victory over China's Yao Xue.

She will face Fitriani Fitriani in the last four, after the Indonesian overcame Chinese Taipei's Chia Hsin Lee 21-16, 13-21, 21-15.
