Sparta snap up Derby misfit

Sparta Rotterdam have completed the signing of Derby County midfielder Iván Calero on a two-year-deal.

The 21-year-old failed to live up to expectations at Pride Park since making the switch from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid two seasons ago, making only three first-team appearances and scoring one goal before being released.

Calero's two-year deal has an option of a third depending on performance and appearance-related clauses.

Signing as a free agent, the Spaniard expressed his delight after joining the oldest club in Dutch football.

"I am very happy with my transfer to Sparta Rotterdam and the Eredivisie," he told the club's official website.

"I've had a good talk with the coach and feel that the game being played in the Netherlands is close to my own playing style and I look forward to meeting with the players next month."

Calero impressed for Derby's U21 Premier league side, scoring 13 goals and registering seven assists in 38 games.
