On this day: June 5

Anastasiya Myskina and Steffi Graf feature in our sporting events that made history on this day.

First Russian grand slam winner

Anastasia Myskina

Myskina etched her name in the record books on this day in 2004 as she became the first Russian to win a grand slam after triumphing at Roland Garros.

Myskina was involved in an all-Russian final against Elena Dementieva and outclassed her opponent 6-1, 6-2.

The 34-year-old was unable to add to her grand slam tally though as injuries and motherhood stopped her from competing in 2007.

Graf wins final grand slam title

Steffi Graf

It was also on this day in 1999 that Graf claimed her 22nd grand slam title when she reigned supreme at Roland Garros.

It has been three years since Graf won her last grand slam at the US Open in 1996, but she defied the odds and downed top seed Martina Hingis 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

However, the final is remembered more for Hingis’ meltdown than Graf’s incredible come-from-behind win.
