Pique fails in red card appeal

Missed penalty brings down grandstand light

The Spanish Football Federation have confirmed that Gerard Pique will serve his four-match ban after having his appeal rejected.

Pique was sent off in the second leg of their Spanish Super Cup defeat to Athletic Bilbao for insulting the assistant referee.

The Spain international subsequently apologised for his behaviour, but maintained that he had not insulted the official.

However, the RFEF announced in a statement on Friday that Barcelona's appeal had "no consistency at all."

"First, because it contains incomplete images, in which you can easily see the lack of continuity between them," the statement continued.

"And secondly, because it is clear that the person who can hear the insult, without doubt, is the assistant referee, which not even the appealing party disputes."

Pique already missed the La Liga opener against Athletic last week and is now set to miss the games against Malaga, Atletico Madrid and Levante.
