Murray and Kyrgios to meet in US Open first round

Third seed Andy Murray will face Nick Kyrgios in the first round of the US Open, following Thursday's draw.

In what is perhaps the toughest first-round match possible, Murray, the 2012 US Open champion, will face the controversial Kyrgios when the tournament gets underway next week in the pick of the opening matches.

World number one Novak Djokovic plays Brazilian Joao Souza in the first round. Djokovic could face eighth seed Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, but the Spaniard has a tough opening clash with teenager Borna Coric.

Second seed Roger Federer will come up against world number 33 Leonardo Mayer in the first round, with Czech Tomas Berdych a potential quarter-final opponent.

Fourth seed Kei Nishikori will face Benoit Paire first up, and finds himself in the same quarter of the draw as seventh seed David Ferrer, with a possible semi-final against Djokovic on the cards.

Defending champion and ninth seed Marin Cilic will face a qualifier first up, and could play Nishikori in the quarter-finals in a repeat of last year's final.

In the women's draw, world number one Serena Williams may have to beat her sister, Venus, if she is to complete a calendar Grand Slam, with the American handed a tricky draw.

The top seed will face Russian Vitalia Diatchenko in the first round, with a second round encounter against Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni or a qualifier next up. She could come up against fellow Americans Sloane Stephens in the third round and talented youngster Maddison Keys in the fourth round.

A meeting between the Williams sisters could take place in the quarter-finals, but Venus will have to fight her way past 12th seed Belinda Bencic and eighth seed Karolina Pliskova if she is to make to the last 16.

Third seed Maria Sharapova is in Williams' half of the draw, and she will come us against Australia’s Daria Gavrilova in the first round and could face either teenager Ana Konjuh or Tatjana Maria of Germany in the second round.

Second seed Simona Halep faces Marina Erakovic of New Zealand first up, while fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki is up against American wild card Jamie Loeb in the opening round.
