An all-round offensive display from Carlos Gomez helped the Houston Astros to a 15-1 win over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
Gomez went 2-for-6 with an RBI double and a three-run homer in a six-run seventh, but not without controversy after getting into a shouting match with catcher John Ryan Murphy after a fly-ball in the sixth.
The Astros got their work done in three high-scoring innings, driving home five runs in the first, four in the fifth and six in the seventh. Jacob Ellsbury scored on a Greg Bird ground-out in the bottom of the ninth for the Yankees' solitary run of the game.
Following the Yankees' defeat, the Toronto Blue Jays seized their opportunity to move into the American League East lead after rallying for a 6-5 win to stun the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers scored in their first four innings to take a two-run lead into the sixth inning, before Edwin Enarcion made it a one-run ballgame with a solo shot in the top of the sixth. Rangers closer Shawn Tolleson walked to pitchers trying to protect the lead, but was helpless as Troy Tulowitzki drove in the tying run with a two-out single.
The Blue Jays were then gifted the late win as Ben Revere made it home on a throwing error by Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre.
The Chicago Cubs continued their impressive run of form as Jake Arrieta became the first pitcher to reach 16 wins on the season in an 8-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants.Kyle Schwarber, Miguel Montero and Starlin Castro all homered as the Cubs powered to their 21st win in their last 25 games.
The LA Dodgers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park. Justin Turner and Jimmy Rollins both homered to back up a solid defence, which delivered three double plays, and clutch relief pitching from the Dodgers bullpen.
New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard earned his first career road win as the visitors beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 at Citizens Bank Park.Syndergaard struck out nine hitters in five innings and added an RBI double to a first-inning Yeonis Cespedes two-run shot and a pinch-hit, two-run single with the bases loaded from Michael Cuddyer in the sixth.
Freddy Galvis and Ryan Howard both smacked two-run homers in the third inning to make for most of the Phillies' offence on the night.
