Croatia captain Darijo Srna is leaving the Euro 2016 squad and returning home following the death of his father, the Croatian Football Federation announced.
The Shakhtar Donetsk player found out the news just moments after starring for Croatia as they beat Turkey 1-0 in their opening Group D clash in Paris on Sunday.
Srna stayed in Paris while the rest of the Croatia squad left to prepare for Friday’s fixture against the Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne.
He will now return to his hometown of Metkovic in Croatia to attend the funeral. It is unclear whether he will be back with the squad for the game with the Czechs.
"The Croatian Football Federation hereby expresses its condolences to the captain and his family for this irreparable loss," the federation said in a statement on its Website.
After the match against the Czech Republic, Croatia face defending champions Spain in their final match in Bordeaux on June 21.
