Fire-starter Mike Tolomia carries undermanned Phoenix to 3rd straight win

Sans two of their main gunners, Phoenix Accelarators still soared atop the AMA Online Education Titans, 97-88, to collect their third straight win in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at JCSGO Gym, Monday afternoon.

Mike Tolomia, who played without college teammate Mac Belo and RR Pogoy this time, took the scoring cudgels for the Accelerators right from the get-go, firing 14 of his 27 points in the first quarter.

Head coach Eric Gonzales decided to sit out Belo and Pogoy as they are both dealing with tightness in their hamstrings.

The undermanned Accelarators were still too much for the still winless Titans, as they managed to erect 23-point lead midway in the 3rd with Ed Daquioag and Alfrancis Tamsi combining for 34 points to backstop Tolomia.

But the Titans refused to go down without a fight, trimming the deficit to as low as 6 but ran out of time in the end.

“Syempre d’i ka naman dapat makuntento. Kita naman evident na wala pa yung consistency na hinahanap ko,” said Gonzalez, whose team is now sitting atop the standings with 3-O record.

“Yun naman ang goal namin, Win as much as we can every game kasi husto namin makuha yung top two,” added Gonzales.

Ryan Ambulo paced the AMA with 18 points coming off the bench, while Jaycee Asuncion and Rey Publico scored 17 apiece but still wasn’t enough to put one in the winning column. – By Jason Mercene
