German shot putter Christina Schwanitz won the gold medal at the World Championships in Beiing after relegating local favourite Gong Lijiao to second place.
After four-time champion Valerie Adams withdrew from the competition due to insufficient recovery time from surgery, Chinese fans had hoped that Olympic bronze medallist Lijao would give them something to celebrate on the night.
Lijiao, who won finished fifth in the same stadium during the Beijing Olympics in 2008, took the early lead with a mark of 20.30m, one she wouldn’t be able to top during the rest of the competition.
The Chinese athlete remained on top of the standings after the second round of throws, but watched on as Schwanitz’s third throw measured at 20.37m.
Neither athlete was able to improve on their marks over the next three attempts.
Michelle Carter of the United States took bronze at 19.76m.
