World number one Novak Djokovic overcame a spirited display from Benoit Paire to book his spot in the third round of the Western & Southern Open.
Djokovic needed an hour and 40 minutes to see off the challenge of the 42nd-ranked Frenchman 7-5, 6-2.
It was Paire who made the early inroads, breaking Djokovic to go 4-3 up in the first set. However, this only served to spur the top seed into life as he won 10 of the next 13 games to wrap up the match and progress to the third round.
The Serb will face 13th seed David Goffin after the Belgian accounted for Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-6(4).
South African Kevin Anderson set up a third-round clash with second seed Roger Federer, a man he has never beaten, after downing American Jack Sock 6-3, 7-6(7).
In earlier matches, Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet secured their places in the third round courtesy of victories over Borna Coric and Thanasi Kokkinakis respectively.
