San Beda gets back at Letran as new stars shine

The San Beda Red Lions are back with a vengeance.

The Mendiola-based squad got back at last year Finals tormentors – Letran Knights – as they scored a close 89-85 victory Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Season 92 Opener at the Mall of Asia Arena.

With Letran refusing to give up just like that coming back from several double-digit deficits to come within three at 82-79 without a hobbling Rey Nambatac and still 1:36 to play, two Red Lions rose to the occasion.

Javee Mocon and Davon Potts took turns in delivering the killer blows that flattened the Knights in the endgame.

Mocon delivered an up-an-under lay-up while Potts broke away in transition that opened up a 7-point cushion, 86-79, heading into the final moments.

The Red Lions sat on a 45-36 cushion at the half but squandered it coming off the break as Letran locked it up at 60-all late in the 3rd quarter.

Since then, San Beda blasted a 17-6 run led by Ranbill Tongco’s 9 points to post another double digit lead, 77-66, with  still 4 minutes remaining.

Mocon topscored for the Lions with 18 points while Potts added 16.

John Quinto put up a game-high 23 points while Nambatac poured in 18 points before he was handcuffed in the dying seconds.  – By Bryan John Ulanday
