Star Hotshots’ newly-acquired guard RR Garcia could not get any prouder of Gilas Pilipinas explosive scorer and former teammate Terrence Romeo after living up to the dream matchup against top-billed players of the world.
Like any other fans, Garcia was in awe when Romeo, together with veteran playmaker Jayson Castro, pushed the limit of NBA star Tony Parker and the world number 5 France in day 1 of the Manila qualifier where Gilas just fell short of their upset bid.
“Iba yung France kasi siyempre Tony Parker, yun yung leader dun, experienced na yun pero sila, like Terrence, bata pa di ba, pero lumalaban,” said the 1-time UAAP MVP to FOX Sports. “Talagang pinakita nila na magaling din sila.”
Romeo and Garcia formed one of the most lethal backcourt tandem for FEU back in their UAAP days that even extended in the PBA with GlobalPort Batang Pier taking them 5th and 6th pick in the 2O13 draft.
They parted ways eventually as Garcia was traded to Barako Bull Energy (now Phoenix Fuel Masters) and just recently to the Hotshots.
Although Romeo and the Gilas company did not find any luck in the Olympic qualifier after falling to New Zealand on Wednesday night, the Zamboanga native combo guard admires the effort given by his rivals and teammates in the PBA alike for the national team.
“Lumaban sila, nakita naman natin, expect ng ibang tao dyan tatambakan tayo. Masaya ako para sa kanila, siyempre kasi nakakalaban ko rin sila sa PBA,” said Garcia. – By Jason Mercene
