Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic will face off in the semi-finals of the Citi Open in Washington on Saturday in a repeat of the 2014 US Open final.
Cilic, who defeated Nishikori at Flushing Meadows to win his first and only Grand Slam title, set up the rematch when he defeated German teenager Alexander Zverev 7-5, 7-6(7-3).
Earlier, Nishikori advanced to the penultimate stage of the event when he beat Australia’s Sam Groth 6-4, 6-4.
"It was my first time playing against Sam. I had to guess on my returns a lot since as hard as he serves, it's tough to see the ball," Nishikori told the ATP website.
"But I was feeling good on my returns, coming in more than usual and being aggressive."
The Japanese is making his fifth appearance at the ATP 500 tournament, but has never advanced further than the quarter-finals at his previous appearances.
The other semi-final will be an all-American affair involving eighth seed John Isner, who beat Ricardas Berankis 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, and Steve Johnson, who upset 15th seed Jack Sock 7-6 (5), 6-1.
