Galtier relieved after defeat

Would David de Gea like to be the next captain of Manchester United?

St Etienne manager Christoph Galtier has expressed his relief after losing 2-1 to Vasile Miriuta in the second-leg but prevailing 4-2 on aggregate in their Europa League qualifier.

Despite the defeat, a 3-0 win in the first-leg means Les Verts qualify for the play-offs of the Europa League where they will face Moldovan outfit FC Milsami over two legs later this month to decide who heads into the group stage of the competition.

Galtier feels his side averted a disastrous capitulation in Romania and believes his side were far below the standard they set for themselves in the first-leg.

"We've qualified – it was a tie of two matches – and I'm sure that we didn't underestimate this Romanian side," he told Ligue 1's official website.

"Luckily we got the job done in the first leg – tactically, technically and in terms of determination, because in this return leg, we didn't produce what you need to produce in a European match.

"We came close to disaster, and had we been eliminated it would have been catastrophic."
