NCAA MVP Grethcel Soltones hopes San Sebastian could reclaim lost basketball glory

Reigning NCAA Women’s Volleyball MVP Grethcel Soltones showed up to support their basketball team, the San Sebastian Golden Stags, against Mapua Cardinals on Friday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

Even with her busy schedule, Soltones, a proud Lady Stag, is making sure she gets to attend her school’s basketball game every once in a while in the NCAA Season 92 Seniors Basketball Tourney.

“Pag wala po akong klase at walang ginagawa. Nanonood po ako,” Soltones bared to FOX Sports.

Although she witnessed her school lose to top contender Mapua, 75-88, Soltones still commended the fight the Stags’ put up.

“They tried their best naman kaso kapos lang talaga. Alam naman nating yung team nila ngayon is better than the last year,” she emphasized.

Being a first hand witness to the Stags’ continuous hardwork, Soltones believes that the coach Egay Macaraya-led squad’s time will come.

“Nagha-hardwork naman sila at extra work out. Nakikita ko naman parati. Mas dedicated sila ngayon. Push pa rin ng push kasi dumaan rin naman ako sa ganyan,” Soltones said.

With their basketball team still feeling their way into the season, Soltones is hoping that it wouldn’t be the case when she tries to lead the Lady Stags to the NCAA women’s volleyball crown.

Her Shakey’s V-League MVP stint will serve as morale-booster for Soltones, who will attempt to erase the stigma of the Lady Stags’ loss to the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers in the NCAA Season 91 Women’s Volleyball Finals.

The Lady Stags last won the NCAA volleyball in 2010 but they still hold the most titles with 23 crowns.

“Syempre. Last year ko na sa Baste. So, sana makuha namin this year. Talagang makukuha namin,” Soltones concluded. – By John Bryan Ulanday
