The UAE Royals defeated the Singapore Slammers 26-20 in the opening match of the International Premier League in Kobe, Japan, on Wednesday.
It was Slammers' Nick Kyrgios that got the Singapore-based franchise off to a winning start. The Australian bad boy eased past world number six Tomas Berdych 6-2 on the hard courts of the Japanese City.
However, the Royals bounced back with a win from former world number one Ana Ivanovic who defeated Belinda Bencic 6-3. Berdych then combined with Daniel Nestor to defeat the Slammers' Dustin Brown and Marcelo Melo 6-5 (7-5) in the men's doubles.
Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic then teamed up to to defeat Melo and Karoliona Pliskova 6-3 in the mixed doubles.
The men's legends was the final tie of the day, where crowd favourite Goran Ivanisevic rolled over Carlos Moya 6-3 to secure a comfortable six-point victory for the Royals.
IPTL newcomers, the Japan Warriors, take on defending champions Indian Aces in the second match of the day in Kobe.
