Janse van Rensburg: ‘It’s an honour to be in the final’

‘Nobody has hit better than me this week’ – Koepka on his ball-striking during third round

Lions centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg has said that the side are honoured to be in the Super Rugby final for the first time.

The 22-year-old centre has been in fine form for the Lions so far in the knockout stages in their wins over the Crusaders and Highlanders.

Summing up the atmosphere in the squad after arriving in New Zealand ahead of Saturday's final, he admitted that the enormity of the victories from the quarter-finals and semi-finals had been felt deeply by all of the players in the side.

“We were just excited to be in Wellington and train for the final. Everyone in the squad is excited… we just want to enjoy this week and the big occasion on Saturday,” Janse van Rensburg told MyPlayers.

“The wins over the Crusaders and Highlanders were emotional victories for us. All the players were overwhelmed with emotions after beating two great teams.

"Looking back to the season, we’ve enjoyed a great run, which has humbled us. However, we realise that we still have one more hurdle to go, so we’re fully focused on that challenge.

“We are very honoured to be in the final and we plan to make the most of the experience.”

Janse van Rensburg's good form has unsurprisingly led to speculation that he will be included by the Springboks in the upcoming Rugby Championship, but for now he's keeping his feet on the ground.

“I owe all the praise to the players around me. It would not be possible without their leadership and guidance,” he added,

“I’m very humbled by the fact that there are calls for me to be in the Springbok squad. That would definitely be a dream come true.”
