Dennis sprints to stage one victory

F1 British Grand Prix – Valtteri Bottas pole position lap

Jos van Emden had set the leading time in the early running, but Dennis shaved 15 seconds off the Dutchman's mark before taking to the sidelines to see if his time would withstand the onslaught from those to come.

Dennis would still lead by the time the final rider crossed the finish line as he became only the seventh Australian to wear the yellow jersey.

German national champion Tony Martin (Etixx-QuickStep) came closest to unseating him, finishing five seconds off the pace in second place. Like most of Dennis' rivals, it would be the second half of the course that would prove his undoing.

Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing), who had won the last five opening time trials in the Tour de France, had to settle for third place this time around, six seconds adrift.

"We decided to go off early, set a bench mark and make everyone else chase me. It worked out perfectly," Dennis said after the stage. "There’s a little bit of shock. We’ve worked with the team and came out here bout a month ago to check and recon the course. It’s the Tour de France and the yellow jersey. I’ve always dreamed of being in this position and now I am.

"It started to sink in when I saw the big threats come in behind me. It was surreal but a few emotions came out."

Among the four main contenders, defending champion Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) put in the best performance, crossing the line the 22nd place, 43 seconds behind Dennis

Chris Froome (Team Sky) was next in 39th place, seven seconds down on Nibali, followed by Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo), 15 seconds back, and Nairo Quintana (Movistar), 18 seconds adrift in 57th.
