Stambouli excited by Schalke 04 project

Benjamin Stambouli says he joined Schalke 04 to be part of the club’s exciting new “sporting project” and to be a key member of the team.

The 26-year-old joined the club after a season with Paris Saint Germain, having previously played for Montpellier and Tottenham Hotspur.

And after enjoying his first few training sessions with the Bundesliga side, Stambouli explained he’s looking forward to his first match, which happens to be against champions Bayern Munich.

“I decided to make this move because I want to join the club on their journey,” he told the club’s official website. “After speaking with manager Markus Weinzierl and Chairman Christian Heidel I was convinced by their sporting project.

“I’ve thought highly of the club since 2012 when I played against them in the Veltins-Arena with Montpelier.

Stambouli added that he brings a wealth of experience to the team having played in the Premier League and in Ligue 1.

“I think I bring the necessary experience which will hopefully help the whole team.On the field, I want to establish myself as a key player within the team and I want to help them with my physical attributes.

“I also think it Is important to communicate a lot with my teammates. It’s part of my character to be outgoing and engage in positive communication.”

And on his first match, he explained: “Irrespective of the opponent I’m looking forward to my first appearance in the stadium.

“Of course we know that we’re playing against Bayern Munich. We want to make sure we’re concentrated and put in a good performance, but the opposition isn’t that important,” the midfielder added.

“We have to try to give everything in every game to be successful. I hope I’ll play against Bayern and I’ll work hard in training to play.”
