There are no hard feelings for Joseph Eriobu even after getting scolded by head coach Atoy Co in the crucial stretch of Mapua’s 67-63 win against the Perpetual Help Altas at the San Juan Arena on Thursday.
The Cardinals were sporting a slim 65-63 lead, when import Allwell Oraeme missed both his free throws with only 9.7 remaining in the clock.
Eriobu managed to grab the offensive board and held on to it before getting fouled. Much to the dismay of Co and the Mapua coaching staff.
The bigman was on the verge of tears after getting the ire of his mentors and was seen emotional as he took and made the crucial free throws which pretty much sealed the game for MAPUA.
“Yung last play, yung rebound ko na yun akala ko kasi wala ng oras. I held the ball tapos pinasa ko daw kay CJ (Isit) kasi open siya,” Eriobu said after the game where he finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
“Hindi ko alam, akala ko talaga wala ng oras, so nasigawan ako, feeling ko baka mapatalo ko yung team,” he said.
Eriobu was emotional up until the final buzzer but said it was not due to the scolding but because he made the two game-winning charities.
“Kaya ko emotional pa rin, kasi I made the last two free throws, crucial free throws para sa team.”
For his part, Eriobu said he understands why his coaches reacted in such way.
“Okay naman sinabi naman nila, may point yung mga coach ko. Good thing lang doon focus lang ako dun sa last two free throws para sa Mapua,” Eriobu said.
“Wala naman [sama ng loob]. After the game, nasa dugout kami kinausap ako ng masinsinan. Para kasi silang tatay sa akin, so siyempre yung anak pag napapagalitan iiyak talaga,” he added. – By John Chester Fajardo
