Chong Wei stays on track in Japan

Top seed Lee Chong Wei cruised into the semi-finals of badminton’s Yonex Japan Open with few problems in Tokyo on Thursday.

The Malaysian superstar needed just 41 minutes to defeat unseeded Shi Yuqi of China 21-12, 21-12 and set up a semi-final matchup against Germany’s Marc Zwiebler.

The unseeded German caused an upset by defeating Indian eighth seed Kidambi Srikanth 18-21, 21-14, 21-19 in 58 minutes.

In another upset, sixth-seeded Son Wan Ho of the Korea Republic beat Danish second seed Viktor Axelsen 21-18, 21-13, while third seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark saw off the challenge of Thai Khosit Phetpradab 21-6, 21-16 in just 32 minutes.

In women’s quarter-final results there were big upsets when, Japan’s sixth seed Akane Yamaguchi defeated countryman and second seed Nozomi Okuhara 21-11, 23-21.

In a match lasting 71 minutes, China’s eighth seed He Bingjiao beat third-seeded Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 22-20, 14-21, 24-22 while seventh seed Sun Yu of China saw off Japan’s Sayaka Takahash1 21-14, 21-9.

In an all-Japan clash, unseeded Aya Ohori needed two hours and 19 minutes to get past unseeded countryman Ayumi Mine 16-21, 21-17, 21-19.
