University of the Philippines head coach Bo Perasol lamented the Fighting Maroons’ 13 missed free throws that could have made a huge difference in their 51-49 loss against the Far Eastern University.
The Maroons put up a late fight in the fourth quarter and gnawed an 11-point lead but could not capitalize on some late game Tamaraw mistake to steal the win from the defending champions.
UP last tied the game at 47-all, and still had the chance to tie the game but Christian Moralde’s desperation heave missed the target.
“There are a lot of things that we were not able to do in the end it did not help that we miss 13 free throws,” Perasol said after the loss at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
However, Perasol said the Maroons built a good momentum from the game and actually played good basketball against the Tamaraws.
He also noted the resurgence of Moralde wo helped them in the offensive in through with 13 points.
“Sa akin, ironically, I think we built a lot of momentum the way we played, I think we really played well. Sinabi ko nga sa kanila it should have been capped with a win,” he said.
“For us, kasi we understand where we came from e. Yung last three losses namin malaki yung naging improvement namin in terms of defense and offense and turnovers probably because naging healthy na rin si Moralde. We had additional firepower, yun lang naman yung importante,” he added.
Meanwhile, Perasol did not defend his guard Paul Desiderio from the physical play of the Tamaraws.
Instead, the UP tactician said he would have done the same, and even more, if we has playing on the opposing team..
“That’s really part of the game. Kung ako yun I would be more physical with Paul as well kasi I know na sya magiging scorer natin e, so it’s just that he has to play through that. Good thing nandyan naman yung mga referees to call it e,” Perasol said.
Perasol however failed to comment on FEU’s Ron Dennison disqualifying foul late in the fourth quarter.
“Hindi ko naklaro masyado e, hindi ko nakita ginawa nya but it still doesn’t change the fact na if I’m FEU I need to be more physical with the guards of UP.,” Perasol explained.
Dennison earlier denied of hitting Desiderio in the stomach area, while the UP guard said he actual felt pain during that play. – By John Chester Fajardo
