India’s Sourabh Varma stunned third seed Marc Zwiebler in front of his home crowd at the Bitburger Badminton Open on Friday.
The unseeded Indian shuttler booked his place in the semi-finals of the tournament after securing a 21-15, 16-21, 21-15 upset victory over the local favourite.
Varma now moves on to face Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, who beat qualifier Fabian Roth 21-12, 19-21, 21-14.
The other semi-final will see fourth seed Shi Yuqi of China take on another Indian, 12th seed Sameer Verma.
Shi overcame fifth seed Jonatan Christie 16-21, 21-14, 21-14, while Verma was 21-14, 21-16 winner over Artem Pochtarov.
In the women’s draw, top seed He Bingjiao of China will take on Thai third seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the first semi-final.
He beat Mette Poulsen 21-16, 21-15 on Friday, while Busanan defeated Sabrina Jaquet 21-9, 21-11.
The other semi-final will be between two more Thai shuttlers – Nitchaon Jindapol and Porntip Buranaprasertsuk.
Nitchaon edged Chia Hsin Lee 10-21, 21-14, 21-9, while Porntip saw off sixth seed Beatriz Corrales 21-12, 21-7.
