Misfiring Marsh needs a bit of luck

Former Australia batsman Mike Hussey believes that Mitchell Marsh has good technique and should back himself to come good sooner rather than later.

Hussey said that he believed Marsh just needs a bit of luck early on in his innings and he could kick on and get a big score.

Marsh averages just over 23 with the bat in Test cricket and has passed thirty just twice in his last fifteen knocks.

The man they called Mister Cricket told cricket.com.au: “I watched him (Marsh) pretty closely today and he actually looked pretty good.

“His technique looked quite solid and quite sound.

“Sometimes you just need a little bit of luck early in your innings, get a couple (of boundaries) away early and get your scoreboard ticking over.

“It’s just where he’s at, at the moment. He’s under a fair bit of pressure to get a score, but I just think he’s got to keep believing in himself, keep backing himself and keep being positive.

“There’s no point him going into his shell. If he can just get a bit of start going, get his confidence up, sometimes it’s just half an hour or an hour in the middle and one or two really good shots out of the middle and your confidence can go sky-high very quickly.”

Despite backing the allrounder to return to form Hussey conceded that if he doesn’t improve Marsh could face the axe from the selectors.

Hussey added: “Everyone needs to perform and how long (to keep persevering) is a tough question to answer.

“He’s such a great package and offers so much balance to the Australian team.

“You need to be performing, but to have that guy who can bowl those handy overs.

“You look at the South Africans at the moment, they’ve literally got two fast bowlers and they’ve got one spinner and a couple of other guys who can help out with the ball.

“But with the Australian attack, having that extra seam bowler really does make a big difference, but in the same breath you need your No.6 making runs.”
