Force India happy with Lotus ‘gift’

Force India are happy to have left Montreal with some points, but deputy team principal Bob Fernley admits they got a bit lucky in the end.

After starting seventh on the grid, Nico Hulkenberg was on course for a decent haul of points, but he lost control of the VJM08 during his battle for position with Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari and had a spin.

Hulkenberg, though, fought his way back and finished P8 to add four more points to Force India's total for the season, leaving them just two behind Lotus.

It was a good comeback from the German in the end as Pastor Maldonado finished P7 while Romain Grosjean was 10th. However, Lotus probably should have scored more points as Grosjean was running higher before he tagged a Manor and was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop.

"It could have been worse. Our worry was the position the Lotuses were in, looking strong. In some ways, once again we were probably gifted a little bit of something from them," Fernley told F1i.com.

"We reckon seventh and eighth were the best we could do. We ended up eighth so I think we did fine."

Force India have plenty of reason to be optimistic as they will introduce their B-spec car at their home race at Silverstone at the beginning of July.

"What’s more important to us is not specifically where we are in a race now, but that fifth, sixth, and seventh [in the Constructors’ Championship] are only two points away. That’s the important bit," he said.

"So, when we launch [our B-spec car] in Silverstone, that’s really when our season starts."
