Scotland training ‘faster, very intensive’

Scotland lock Tim Swinson has spoken about the changes to training already brought in by new boss Gregor Townsend.

Swinson and the rest of the squad are preparing to take on Italy in the first of their June matches this Saturday in Singapore, in what will be Townsend's first game in charge.

And Swinson, who worked with Townsend at Glasgow Warriors, admitted that the first few weeks under the new head coach had been both intense but informative.

“Everything is faster,” he told The Scotsman.

“The couple of weeks in St Andrews and Edinburgh were very intensive. Everything was very focused, it was good to do that but we could still have a good laugh.

"It is very clear what we need to do and what he wants us to do, which is good. The game he [Townsend] wants to play is very fast and very skilful so it’s good to keep on with that skill work."

With Richie Gray absent from the tour due to injury, Swinson is focused on cementing a starting spot having played second fiddle to the Gray brothers in the Six Nations.

“I am focusing on performing. I don’t think it matters whether Richie Gray was here or not, I’m sure I would still have had an opportunity to play," he explained.

"Maybe I’ll play a bit more, so that would be good. “Being consistent is the key: do what I do well repeatedly over the full 80-minutes – that would be nice.”
