Austrian Grand Prix: FP3 as it happened

Follow all the action from FP3 at the Austrian Grand Prix live right here.

18:05 That’s that for all three practice sessions then! Please join us for Qualifying later on and we’ll see who the King of the Ring is heading into tomorrow’s race. We’ll be back to talk you through it at 20:00 sharp, until then, have a lovely weekend.

18:03 Here’s the sharp end of the order for you:

18:00 And that will do it for FP3! Sebastian Vettel has done the business this morning, but the margins are rather small. Qualifying should be good.

17:56 Oh no! A brake failure for Hamilton and the Briton is into the gravel! He manages to escape but he’s limping his way back to the pits in second gear. Worried looking faces in the German outfit’s garage.

17:52 Top of the time sheets, top as they pass the speed gun…

17:48 Vettel has another go and sets purple first and second sectors, but traffic in sector three means he loses the chance to improve. Hamilton’s 1.05.361 remains the fastest time of the day. And as I say that, Vettel tries yet again and this time he lowers the benchmark to 1.05.092. That leaves him 0.269 seconds up on Hamilton, with Bottas a futher two tenths back. Our two leaders have been nice and behaved so far today though…

17:44 Vettel and Hamilton are both out there on new ultrasofts, the silver car is 0.023 seconds quicker than the red. Ferrari haven’t exactly spent much time out there though…

17:38 A certain unhappy fellow might just get another bite at the cherry…

17:35 And here’s the rest of the order for you:

17:30 Halfway through the session now, Vettel still a step ahead of the two silver cars…

17:25 Hamilton starts off with a modest time, but soon improves to a 1.05.9, before Vettel hits the front on a 1.05.3.

17:20 Valtteri Bottas is the first of the main protagonists to set a time, and the Finn goes P4, half a second off Verstappen’s pace.

17:16 Back to the on-track business then. Max Verstappen leads the way for the moment, with Daniel Ricciardo 0.474 seconds behind in P2.

17:11 Here’s the moment it all came tumbling down for the unfortunate Spaniard.

17:07 Oh dear! Carlos Sainz has stopped out on track! The Spaniard comes on the radio and makes it plain: “Engine. Engine.” He’s stayed in the car while Toro Rosso try to get the issue sorted out from the pit wall. And now the marshalls are pushing the car away, it seems like that’s it for Sainz!

17:00 Right, let’s get to it! The light turns green and Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen are first out for Haas.

16:52 Less than ten minutes to go now. It’s dry, with little chance of rain, but not overly warm, with an air temperature of 22 degrees and a track temperature of 30 degrees. Clouds in the area.

16:45 15 more minutes to go. In other overnight news, rumours abound that Max Verstappen has asked to leave Red Bull after 2018 in order to join Ferrari the following year. Couples with Carlos Sainz’ public statement that he doesn’t see himself at Toro Rosso next year, there seems to be a fair bit of dissatisfaction in the Red Bull ranks.

16:40 There wasn’t much too choose between the top five cars at the end of FP2 yesterday. The Austrian circuit is rather short, which means that the margins were always going to be a little smaller than usual.

16:35 Some important news for you that came through overnight: Lewis Hamilton will be taking a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox. That’s an unfortunate blow for the Mercedes man, he looked rather rapid in the first two practice sessions yesterday.
