Austrian Grand Prix: Qualifying as it happened

Colin Cowherd knows exactly how No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 12 Syracuse will end on Saturday

Follow all the action from Qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix live right here.

21:07 That’s it for Qualifying then! Here’s the rest of the top ten for you. Please join us tomorrow at 20:00 for the race, where everything will be decided. Until then, take care!

21:05 We were robbed of a thrilling climax by the stopped Haas of Grosjean, but fair play to Bottas, he delivered first time round and made his first lap count.

21:02 And there we have it, it’s all over! Grosjean stops on circuit and the yellow flags come out! Nobody can improve on their first runs! Valtteri Bottas is your pole man today! Vettel is P2, with Hamilton P3, but of course he has that penalty to come.

20:57 The main men are coming back out for their final efforts, it’s crunch time. Who will it be?

20:55 The drivers are heading back to the pits to prepare for their final runs.

20:52 After the opening laps, Bottas leads the way on a 1.04.251, with Vettel P2 and Hamilton P3.

20:48 Time to do the business, it’s Q3!

20:44 Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and Force India have managed to get both their cars through to Q3, while we also have one Haas (Grosjean) and a Toro Rosso (Sainz).

20:43 It’s all over in Q2 then! Ocon squeaks through in P10, while Hulkenberg and Alonso fall short by half a tenth!

20:37 Time to get down to business for the guys at the back…

20:35 As we enter the final few minutes of Q2, the top 3 are separated by less than 0.2 seconds. But who is hiding performance, and how much?

20:30 A very useful time for Hamilton on his red tyres, Bottas is only 0.160 seconds faster on a sets of ultrasofts.

20:27 Mercedes have sent Hamilton out on supersofts for his first run. If he ends up starting on them, he’ll probably run a longer first stint and make use of the ultrasoft tyres in the latter part of the race.

20:25 Let’s get back to it for Q2! Kevin Magnussen has exited his car and clearly won’t participate in Q2 despite making it through.

20:21 And that’s it for Q1! A major shock as we lose both Williams! They’re joined by Palmer and the two Saubers. After that dream result in Baku, the Grove-based squad have come plummeting down to earth!

20:17 Into the final moments of Q1 now, time for the danger-zone drivers to turn on the magic…

20:13 All nice and split up at the top…

20:11 More trouble for Haas as Magnussen has developed suspension trouble from the kerbs at turn 3. The Dane is currently P8, after setting a handy opening lap.

20:09 Grosjean has had a moment but has managed to rejoin the circuit. Vettel has taken over at the top with a 1.05.585, ahead of Ricciardo and Ocon. Ah, Hamilton pips the German by 0.347 seconds, albeit on ultrasofts.

20:05 First laps coming in. Magnussen is currently top with a 1.06.1. The Ferrari pair have also come out, but they’ve gone for supersoft tyres rather than ultrasofts.

20:00 Right then, it’s time for Q1! Out come the two Saubers and the two Haas drivers. Sainz is also out, presumably to build up some confidence.

19:55 Five minutes to go until Q1. Here’s the weather for you, its a fair bit warmer than this morning.

19:50 With Hamilton being held back by his penalty, there’s room for a new face to join the list of Austrian pole sitters…

19:45 As for Hamilton, even though the Briton is consigned to starting on the third row of the grid at best, it is imperative that he delivers to the best of his ability today. He certainly doesn’t want to be left further back than necessary.

19:40 Of course, the German’s bid is further strengthened by Lewis Hamilton’s five-place grid penalty. It’s a golden opportunity for the man in the scarlet car to further stamp his authority on a season that is already going well for him.

19:35 Not for the first time this season, Sebastian Vettel led the way in FP3. Can the Ferrari man claim the best spot on the grid today?

19:30 Hello there, welcome back and thank you for joining us for Qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Thirty more minutes until Q1 gets underway!
