Fil-German big man Christian Standhardinger may still be months away from being fluent in Tagalog but at least he knows the most important local word in Gilas Pilipinas’ book.
Standhardinger took pride of rallying behind the national team’s battlecry “Puso” to the core in Gilas’ rousing 88-72 victory over host Taiwan A in the second day of Jones Cup despite the hostile crowd.
“I think we had a good job executing the gameplan. I love playing with these guys. We play with a lot of heart, Puso!” said Standhardinger in the post-game presser, as heard in Philippine Daily Inquirer veteran reporter Musong Castillo’s short clip tweet.
The 6-foot-8 pony-tailed forward was actually at the center of the great show they gave to the OFWs who trooped to the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall during their day-off.
Standhardinger, who just arrived a month ago to join Gilas, registered his finest performance while donning the national colors, tallying 17 points and 16 rebounds as he outworked his veteran Taiwanese foes in the paint.
He also dished out 3 assists while also submitting a steal and a block for an all-around performance.
“And we play with a lot of fighting spirit everytime,” he added.
Boosted by their shocking win over Taiwan’s finest, Standhardinger believes they can do more wonders as they progresses in the 9-day joust.
“I feel every game we play together, we got a little bit better and I think that’s the most important thing,” stressed Standhardinger, leaving a smile to head coach Chot Reyes’ face.
