Axelsen, Okuhara claim gold medals at World Championship

Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen and Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara won the mens singles and womens singles at the World Championships in Glasgow on Sunday.

PV Sindhu and Okuhara fought tooth and nail in a brilliant ladies final that almost lasted two hours.

In the end, it was Okuhara who emerged victorious, winning 21-19, 20-22, 22-20.

Speaking afterwards, India’s Sindhu admitted she was devastated by the result.

“I am upset. In the third game, it was anybody’s game at 20-all. Everybody aims for gold and I was there very close but that last moment changed everything,” she said.

In the men’s final, Axelsen beat the legendary Lin Dan 22-20, 21-16 in what was a major upset.
