Schweinsteiger calls for more

AFC Cup 2019: Hà Nội FC 3-2 Altyn Asyr FK (Nguyễn Văn Quyết Penalty 87′)

After Friday’s shock 4-1 defeat at second-placed Wolfsburg, Bayern took a point despite playing for more than 70 minutes with 10 men in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at home to Schalke, who are fourth.

Arjen Robben’s second-half header for the hosts was cancelled out by Benedikt Hoewedes at Bayern’s Allianz Arena after Germany defender Jerome Boateng was sent off with just 17 minutes gone.

Bayern hold an eight-point lead at the top of the table, but having taken just a single point from a possible six, Schweinsteiger wants both a win and convincing display at second-from-bottom Stuttgart.

“We need a win as well as a good performance in Stuttgart,” Schweinsteiger said.

“We played better than we did against Wolfsburg, we controlled the game more and didn’t allow them to counter-attack, but we’re not happy to have drawn with Schalke.

“Even with 10 men, we still had chances to win the game.”

Tuesday’s draw could have been a different scenario for Bayern had Robert Lewandowski’s goal not been disallowed. Unhappy at the call, Pep Guardiola rushed over to lambaste assistant referee Markus Haecker in the aftermath.

However, Guardiola’s mood was rather more jolly when Arjen Robben put Bayern into a surprise lead ??? after the goal he cuddled the fourth official before rushing all the way to the corner flag and back to Haecker to shake his hand.

The former Barcelona boss was quick to play down the significance of the incident, playfully claiming he should have considered a better target.

“I would have loved to celebrate the same way with (female) fourth official (Bibiana Steinhaus) in Gladbach”.
