Q&A with La Salle star spiker Mika Reyes

MANILA — Two weeks before the UAAP Season 78 volleyball wars begin, Lady Spiker Mika Reyes sat down with Fox Sports PH to open up about preparing for her last playing year and what lies behind.

FOX: How do you feel entering your final season in the UAAP?
Mika: Excited talaga ako sobra. At the same time, nakaka-sad kasi last na rin siya. Mixed feelings siya for me.

FOX: Which feeling is more prominent?
Mika: Siguro mas excited ako. Hindi siya yung compared sa normal year lang na pwede pa ako bumawi next year. Ngayon, it’s now or never.

FOX: How long have you prepared for this tournament?
Mika: More than a year kasi na-move. Sumali rin kami sa ibang leagues like PNG, Intercol, PSL, Unigames. Okay naman yung preparation. Polishing and pag-create ng chemistry as a team.

FOX: Last year didn’t end well for you.
Mika: Hindi talaga maganda yung ending last year kasi hindi lang isa, kundi dalawa yung na-injure. Sana hindi na ulit mangyari.

FOX: How did you refocus after getting swept in the finals?
Mika: Before kasi si Ara, open. Kailangan namin i-fill in yung position niya. Madami rin nag tryout sa position niya. Tapos ngayon nakabalik na siya. Makaka-benefit din yung preparation namin para dun.

FOX: You didn’t expect she’ll fully recover in time for the season?
Pero she did and last year nag-train with us ulit.

FOX: How has Ara’s integration been with the team?
Mika: Okay naman. Same. Siya pa rin si Ara Galang.

FOX: It’s your fifth year playing for La Salle. How do you see your role within the team?
Mika: As a senior, siguro kailangan mag start ako sa sarili ko. And may nadagdag na rookies so i-gui-guide namin sila.

FOX: Are you changing your playing and leadership style? Are you going to be more assertive on court?
Mika: Wala naman akong special na binago. Skills-wise, meron.

FOX: Your PSL stint didn’t end well, too. Did it affect your psyche as a team?
Mika: No naman. Maganda siyang experience kasi di mo siya magagawa most of the time.

FOX: With the season about to begin, how do you see La Salle performing in the UAAP?
Mika: Ayoko magsalita ng tapos, basta we’ll play lang.

FOX: But you’re positive you’ll do well?
Mika: Syempre.

FOX: And your dream isn’t just to make the Final Four?
Mika: Of course. May goal pa rin naman kami. Ayoko lang magsalita ng tapos.

FOX: What should fans expect from you this season?
Mika: Syempre last playing year ko na, expect nila as a team, maraming ga-graduate, expect nila na lalaban at lalaban pa rin kami. Hindi kami magpapatalo talaga. Kasi wala e, last na to. Wala na kaming magagawa. Invite ko nalang sila manood kasi maganda yung games ngayong season. Lahat ng team lumakas.

FOX: Have you thought of life after the UAAP?
Wala pa naman. Focused muna ako sa last playing year ko.
