Facing Vince Mangulabnan fuels Ish Polvorosa’s drive to be better

Ateneo’s offensive attack was on full display against NU, thanks to Ish Polvorosa, who delivered brilliant playmaking once more in Game 1 of the finals.

Marck Espejo, Rex Intal and Ysay Marasigan all finished in double figures, combining for 46 points as the Blue Spikers downed the Bulldogs in 4 sets at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Orchestrating the Katipunan side’s attack, Polvorosa finished with 59 excellent sets and 7 points as he pushed Ateneo one game closer to back-to-back titles.

It was an impressive performance to say the least, but the veteran playmaker said he wasn’t entirely happy with how he fared.

“A bit sloppy nung first set actually kasi parang ako yung pinagmulan ng less intensity type ng game namin,” he told FOX Sports. “Siyempre as a setter I have to communicate with them, and I wasn’t able to do that in the first set.”

“Nung second to the last set kasi nag-click na kmai ng mga spikers ko. Nakuha ko na rin yung groove ko sa pags-set. Thankful din ako sa mga rume-receive sa amin. Overall, I am actually happy naman. Nakaperform naman kami ng maayos,” he added.

Matched up against another premiere setter in NU’s Vince Mangulabnan, Polvorosa said facing his rival fuels his drive to be better.

“First year pa lang ako siya na yung Best Setter. Hanggang ngayon, I admire him as a setter kasi ang galing e,” he said of the Season 75 top playmaker. “I love taking challenges naman. Hindi ko na iniisip yun, kasi alam ko naman na parehas kaming magaling. Pana-panahon lang yan. This year time namin, dati time nila.”

But though he believes 2016 is the year they win 2 straight titles, Polvorosa doesn’t want to speculate on what will happen in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Nonetheless, he vows to give it their all.

“I can’t say anything right now. Pero same mindset pa rin. All for God pa rin. Tulong tulong pa rin. Hard work talaga kasi marami na kami sinakripisyo. As for me, I will start the game better than this game.” — By Arylle Magtalas
