As Ateneo’s reign atop the UAAP crumbled before her very eyes, Maddie Madayag couldn’t help but think of what-ifs had she played in the Finals.
A revelation for the Lady Eagles early in Season 78, the Davao native saw her breakout campaign come to an abrupt halt after tearing her ACL right before the Holy Week break.
Madayag then underwent surgery before manning the sidelines and cheering for her teammates late in the second round and in the playoffs.
Ateneo bowed to La Salle in Game 3 of the championship round, with Amy Ahomiro, who replaced Madayag in the middle position, only contributing 1 point in the devastating loss.
The sophomore spiker hopes to have helped the Katipunan belles go for a 3-peat.
“Medyo disappointed nga kasi kung hindi ako na-injure, naka-contribute sana ako sa team,” she told FOX Sports while adding she has moved on from the heartbreak of her unfortunate injury.
Now, she can only hope the Lady Eagles come back stronger next year, even with the departure of vital cogs Alyssa Valdez and Ahomiro.
“Sipag lang sa therapy and yung iba rin na out of season, babalik talaga sila. Sina Ana (Gopico), Mich (Morente),” she said. “Malaking butas yung mawawala sa team namin, pero yun susubukan namin mag-adjust kasi iba rin pag nawala sila. Adjust kami kasi di naman forever ganoon.” — By Jason Mercene
