Setter Jewel Lai out of UP lineup. Here’s why

BAGUIO CITY — Jewel Lai, the steady UP setter, has not seen action for the Lady Maroons in the 13th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference so far.

And according to team manager Cecille Ronquillo, the sophomore playmaker has been removed from the team.

Talking to FOX Sports during the Intercollegiate tournament here, Ronquillo said the former Hope Christian HS stalwart will not be with the UP squad for the foreseeable future.

“She is officially out of the team so she can focus on her academics,” she shared.

Lai has been the Lady Maroons’ starting setter the past 2 seasons, bringing a consistent presence and helping lead the Diliman crew to its first Final Four appearance in 12 years.

Taking over for her is Season 78 backup Mae Angeli Basarte and youngster Rose Mary Cailing, who started when Lai missed UP’s tournament opener. — By Mac Dionisio
