Laoag power-smashed its way into an easy 25-18, 25-10, 25-11 cakewalk Baguio to get back on track in the 13th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.
Sensing blood, the Power Smashers took advantage of the Summer Spikers’ nervous and erratic reception and fired a tournament-best 21 service aces to even its record at 3-3.
Setters Fhen Emnas and Chie Saet led Laoag’s assault from the service line, combining for 13 aces to backstop Mylene Paat and Jovie Prado, who each delivered 10 points apiece.
After a bitter loss to Bali Pure last Wednesday, coach Nes Pamilar joined his wards in moving on and keeping their bid for a semifinals seat alive in the 8-team field.
“Sabi ko sa kanila kanina, ‘Kalimutan na natin yung last game natin. Kailangan natin mag-pursige para at least maka-playoff pa tayo,’” he said post-match.
The Power Smashers get more than a week of rest before returning to action in what is tipped to be a do-or-die battle with UP next Monday.
Meanwhile, Baguio could not get anything going as they slipped to their fifth straight loss.
Carmela Dicksen and Krissian Tsuchiya scored 8 points each for the Summer Spikers, but nobody else scored more than 2 markers for the only winless team in the league. — By Josiah Albelda
